I love our house and I find it hard to believe we’ve been here just 7 years. I still revel in the extra space we have inside and out compared to our previous house.
And we continue making progress, even if most people don’t see it. I get the impression that people will only think we’ve made progress when we remove the lift. And I agree that will be a big day, but we’re making progress in other ways as we continue working out the layout we want.
Bedroom
We had built-in wardrobes at our old house so bought some rails as an emergency when we moved here. And it took us almost 7 years to replace them, and wow what a difference it makes, for looks, tidiness and convenience.
Next steps:
We need to get some bedside tables to match the new wardrobes. I would also like to make it a more relaxing and calming space, to encourage more sleep. I’d love to have a soft cozy carpet, but that will need to wait until we’ve changed the wall layout.
What makes your bedroom a relaxing place? What would you have in your dream bedroom?
Study
We got a carpet for the study, and oh my goodness it is lovely. We don’t have any nice carpets in the house as they were installed for use with wheelchairs, with no underlay. I admit I did go and lie on the study floor a few times.
We’ve used this room as a photo booth for M’s birthday party, and my husband has his drum kit in there, so although there is no furniture in there at the moment, it is still getting used.
Next actions:
We’ve decided to furnish this room as a study, even though we may need to sleep in here for a bit. The problem we’re having is finding shelving that we like.
What shelving units do you like? What is your must have study furniture?
Changed from oil to gas
The house originally had an oil tank and boiler, despite there being a gas pipe in the road. But last year we lost oil, we believe through a combination of theft and a leak, and we knew we’d need to change the boiler at some point, so we decided to make the change to gas. What a difference it makes not having an oil tank on the drive and not having to organise oil deliveries.
Garden
Our garden table fell apart during last summer, so we decided to go all out and bought a large dining table and a swing seat. It is so lovely to enjoy our garden without worrying about getting splinters. Plus the swing seat is on the concrete base from the old greenhouse. The garden immediately looked neater when the greenhouse remains were removed.
Next steps:
I’m thinking of getting the garden designed. I’m not a gardener and don’t enjoy the raised flowers beds we have. I’d love to get some ideas on what else we could do with the space and start making it in to a really enjoyable space to spend time. And which doesn’t need lots of tendering.
I want to focus on the positive changes we’re making to our dream home, but if you’re interested in knowing some of the things we haven’t done yet, have a look at the post from our last house anniversary.
