Now we’re in November, it is time to start thinking about Christmas films. In the past we’ve struggled to get in to the Christmas feel until a few days before the big day, so we now start watching Christmas films early. We start with films that have a slight Christmas connection (almost blink and you miss it) and gradually build up the Christmas feel the closer we get to Christmas day.
So last night we started with Mr & Mrs Smith* which is based at Christmas time, but it is not mentioned so it is very easy to not notice it unless you are looking at the background. We class this type of film as Level 1; Level 3 is very festive possibly with Christmas in the title, and Level 2 are those in the middle for example Christmas is mentioned, but it isn’t the main part of the story.
Christmas films
This is our list of films grouped by the level of Christmas; plus a list of films we don’t have that I believe could be added to the list.
Italics means we don’t own it yet
Note: I’m updating the list with the suggestions people are making in the comments
When do you start watching Christmas films? What are your favourites? Are they in my list?

I am a Christmas film obsessive. I’ve happily started watching the cheesy christmas films on Channel 5 already, and recording them. And they are some seriously rubbish films, but really make me feel christmassy.
There’s also obviously The Snowman and Father Christmas (which N watches throughout the year), but they really make it Christmas watching those on Christmas eve. But really anything Christmas oriented and I’m there!
Thank you, Emma I will add those to our list. The reason they are not already on there are because the children always watch them when they are at the Grandparents so I’d forgotten about them. I only got into watching Christmas films a few years ago so I think I’m missing a few I probably should have watched as a child.
Mickey’s Christmas Carol! Or even the Jim Carrey scary version! Elf is hysterical… In a more adult themed way… Bad Santa? 😀 Love Actually is so Xmasy! I love it!
I have to admit that I didn’t really enjoy Love Actually the first time I saw it so I was going to get rid of our DVD, but in the end I decided to put it in with our Christmas collection and I hope I’ll enjoy it more when I’m in a festive mood. I haven’t seen Elf so that is certainly on the list to buy in a few years (the children get a new DVD every Christmas Eve).
Thank you for your suggestions I’m going to add them to the list so it will hopefully come the ultimate Christmas film list 😉
Love this post. We started watching some christmas films a few weeks ago. Elf is a personal favourite of mine and I adore love actually. My daughter loves to watch the polar express x #ABloggersChristmas
Thank you Kerry. My daughter still gets a bit scared of the Polar Express, but that means we get to cuddle while we watch it. In the past I haven’t enjoyed Love Actually so I’m hoping I’ll find it better this year, and it certainly seems that I’m missing out as I haven’t seen Elf, that is one we’ll have to buy in the future.
I’m planning on getting the girls round the week after my sons birthday (4th December – Christmas stuff except advent calendars starts after his birthday for us) and watching a whole heap of films! #ABloggersChristmas
Thank you for your comment Rebecca. My birthday is 1st December so we don’t start Christmas until that evening so my birthday doesn’t get overwhelmed. It means the day gets exciting in the evening when we get the Christmas boxes out of storage.
Seeing this list makes be want to watch Love Actually and The Holiday again – not going to admit how many times I have watched both so far! I love Christmas films and have watched lots that were definitely made for TV over the years but I’m like a big child and just love them. One that I watch every year is The Christmas Choir – I just love the story and it has some romance too so a perfect mix for me!
Thank you for the film suggestion, I haven’t heard of the Christmas Choir. I will look out for it.
