Watkins Publishing noticed my recent post that I want to read all the self development books I’ve collected over the years, and kindly sent me some of their recent releases to add to the list. The first one I’ve read is I am / You are* by Rosemary Gallagher.
I am / You are is a small book that provides single word affirmations in an alphabetical format, for example I am blessed. However, the book is actually double sided, one side consists of affirmations starting I am … and the other side has the same affirmations starting You are… When I first looked at the book I knew I would use the I am side, but couldn’t think when I might use the You are side, however after thinking about it for a few days I’ve thought of two ways; if you want to tell someone how great you think they are or to use affirmations about how you want to see the world around you. The official blurb describes the two sides as:
The ‘I Am’ side of the book is an affirmation of our internal journey, who we are to ourselves; the ‘You Are’ side is a statement of intention to the world on your external journey, how we would like the world to see us. They mirror each other in perfect symmetry – inner and outer meeting as one.
Although it is a small book, it is big in design, with each affirmation having a different style and typography. This made a few pages a bit tricky to read the first time, but as there is only one word on a page it doesn’t take long to work it out.
I think the book is good for people who want to start changing their thoughts to a more positive view of themselves, without reading lots of introduction and explanation. This book provides a simple start with one word affirmations that are easy to remember and repeat, but are still powerful messages. I think it could also make a nice small gift.
The book is available to buy now and costs £4.99.
Watkins Publishing has also offered to send a copy of this book I am / You are to two of my readers; just complete the Gleam form below for your chance to win – good luck!

Gaskell, Carole – Your pocket life coach, This looks like a book I should read, so maybe you would like to as well. I have just secured a job as a supervisor for a local council so have been looking at improving myself as well as my staff.
Congratulations on your new job Sally I hope it goes well. I recently had a clear out of books but I used to have some about managing people, they were along the lines of Having fun at work and 101 ways to reward staff. They are not about improving people but I believe people will be motivated to work harder if they are happy and feel appreciated.
Great prize xx
I would like to read Palace of Treason-
Jason Matthews
The road less travelled – I have read some great reviews!
Hello Tracy, thank you for your suggestion it is a book that I’ve heard good things about and that is why I’ve had a copy for many many years. The next step is to read it.
Faber, Adele – How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk. This sounds like a useful book.
I agree Monica it does sound like a useful book. My eldest is seven now and I worry about when she’ll stop communicating with me, hopefully this book will give me some tips to encourage great communication between us and smooth out the teenage years.
Croft, Chris – Time management Sounds good
Thank you for the suggestion Aaron. I’ve done a project management course with the author of this book but haven’t heard his advice on time management before.
Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret thoroughly changed my outlook on life for the better around 10 years ago, although I now think that Genevieve Davies’ book Becoming Magic (and the others in that series) are far better at explaining things – they’re also very cheap to buy on kindle which is a bonus!
Thank you Alix. I haven’t heard of Becoming Magic so will add it the list when I next update it. I read the Secret a few years ago and found it interesting but not amazing as I wanted more information so hopefully this book will provide it.
Hope you enjoy it – let me know how you get on. The secret is massively simplified & leaves more questions that it answers I think. Saying that, I was a very unhappy person when I first read it & it did massively change my life for the better just by changing my focus. Love your blog by the way – wish I had the discipline to write regularly like you do – I discarded my blog a while ago because I couldn’t decide what to focus on!
My plan is to write a review of each book after I’ve read it, so as long as you keep visiting you’ll see what I think 😉 I have to admit though I’m finding the current book slower going than I expected and if they all take this long I may lose enthusiasm.
Thank you for your comments about my blog. I also struggle on focus and if you look through my archive you’ll notice I’ve changed a few times over the last 8 years. Last year, I really made an effort to work out what I wanted to write about, if you haven’t seen that post you may find it useful if you want to start your blog again. https://darktea.co.uk/darktea/blog/how-to-find-your-blog-niche-with-a-worked-example Let me know if you do and I’ll come and visit.
I will definitely keep reading! Thanks for the link – will check it out.
🙂
lovely giveawayxx
Patrick Holford’s Beat stress and fatigue
Thank you for the suggestion Christopher. This is a book I have read before but several years ago so I think it would be good to read it again.
Lee Child’s new book – personal.
I love the idea of this book. Hope I get chance to own one.
The Book of Mindfulness by Lizzie Cornwall
Thank you for the suggestion I will add it to my list.
I recommend The Shed by Jo Ettles

A rather decent entry into the self help sector and some unique ideas.
Thank you for the suggestion, I haven’t heard of that book before but I agree with the concept and I’m working on sorting my stuff and clutter out so I think it would be an interesting read.
Paul McKenna – I can make your sleep. Sleep is so, so important and I think so often underestimated!
I agree and that is why it is my only resolution this year. I partly read this book a few years ago and found it helped me get to sleep more easily.
Melissa Olivero – Declutter and lets face it most of us have so many possessions, half of them unnecessary. The right time of year to have a good spring clean and take items to the local charity shop and have an organised and tidy house
I agree, I have made many trips to charity shops over the last few weeks. It is amazing how much stuff collects without us consciously noticing.
What a great prize I’d like to read that.
How To Be Brilliant by Michael Heppell sounds like a positive encouraging read
52 Ways to Live a Kickass Life – really helped me when I needed it!
Thank you for the suggestion, I’ve added it to my wishlist
The book of Mindfulness – just what everyone needs for the calm in the storm
This is a massive list – start at the top – and lots of luck
Mark Forster. How to Make Your Dreams Come True
The road less travelled
How to make your dreams come true – Mark Forster
i;d like to read Palace of Treason great prize x
I think Get a life: Reclaim your desk, organize your week & manage your time by John Richardson sounds like a good read… I’m rubbish at staying organised so I could do with reading it too. 😉
Ashton x
This looks like such an inspiring book that I’d love to read! A lovely ray of positivity 🙂
I have never read a self help book before but I have always wanted to give one a proper chance, because of that I couldnt recommend any to you, but this seems rather interesting ‘Rubin, Gretchen – The happiness project’
